History

Risen from The Ashes of a forgotten time, Althura is young world. 500 years ago, we emerged from The Time of Ash when our places of power and learning were destroyed, our knowledge and worship forgotten. Memories and traces of the past were lost, destroyed or gone forever. The Ashes of things from the Time Before caused sickness and disfigurement in those who survived the destruction. Some wasted away to nothing and the rest of us live briefer lives as a lingering impact of that blight. Orcs, Goblins and darker things roamed the land in vast hordes, another force pushing us towards destruction. The first to recover were the Dwarves and Elves, though they lost the most to the disease and in the Earning war. The Dwarves receded within their mountains after the Humans and Halflings were able to bolster the Elven front and waged their own war on the evil that had spread over the land. The Dwarves brought the Gnomish people with them, having worked together since emerging from the Ashes. The Elves reclaimed the forests of Althura, first the scattered islands at the heart of Althura’s inner sea, Starsfall Islands. Then, as the tides of war slow turned in our favor, the Elves took The Ancient Wilds and eventually the Isle of Eternal Summer. The Halflings recovered after the war ended, about 300 years ago, when the Whitefog Halfling family claimed most of the eastern portion of Althura for the Halfling effort in the war. They settled The Land of Three Tears, named for its three lakes. Humans had a much harder time with things, nearly destroyed during the war, Human-kind bounced back over the generations. Small villages and tribes of roaming Humans settled the southwestern plains of Althura. Struggles among these villages, bandits and nomads persisted for 275 years before uniting into the Iman Kingdom under Haggard Espern. The Warborn, a community of orphans of war and mixed-race peoples shunned as a reminder of the darkness of war, live in the Lawless Fields of the Northeast. Seekers of the past, called the Lost by some, look to recover the lost history of Althura.
